Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the appointment of Sushila Karki as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, calling it an important step in the country’s democratic journey. In his first reaction, Modi said India remains firmly committed to working with Nepal’s new leadership to strengthen ties and ensure stability in the region.
Modi described Nepal as a “fellow democracy” and assured that India will continue to stand by its neighbour during the political transition. He noted that the relationship between the two countries is rooted in shared history, culture, and people-to-people bonds, and that cooperation will move forward regardless of political changes in Kathmandu.
The Indian government has stressed that it views Karki’s appointment as part of Nepal’s democratic process and hopes the interim administration will provide stability ahead of the next elections. Officials also underlined that bilateral projects in trade, connectivity, power, and people exchanges will remain on track.
Sushila Karki, a respected legal figure and Nepal’s first woman to serve as Chief Justice, has now taken on the role of leading the country through its interim phase. Her elevation has been widely seen as a move to ensure impartiality and public trust during a period of political uncertainty.
India’s prompt and positive response highlights New Delhi’s focus on maintaining close cooperation with Nepal while supporting democratic institutions in the Himalayan nation.
