Former Punjab Inspector General Amar Singh Chahal is battling for his life after a suicide attempt in Patiala. He allegedly shot himself at his residence on Monday morning. Family members rushed him to Park Hospital without delay. Doctors admitted him with a severe chest injury. His condition remains critical, according to hospital sources.
Police recovered a 12-page suicide note from the house. Chahal reportedly mentioned heavy financial distress in the note. He claimed losses due to an online fraud pushed him into depression. Investigators have started verifying these claims. Officers are examining digital and financial records.
Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma said police teams reached the spot immediately. They secured the residence and collected evidence. Forensic experts also inspected the scene. Police said they will record statements once doctors allow questioning.
Chahal previously served as a senior officer in the Punjab Police. He was also an accused in the 2015 Faridkot firing case. In February 2023, a Special Investigation Team filed a chargesheet against him. The case also named several political leaders and officials.
The incident has shocked police circles across Punjab. Authorities said further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
