Two more independent councillors withdrew support from the ruling AAP’s Sangrur Municipal Council president Bhupinder Singh Nahal on Friday, deepening the AAP Sangrur Municipal Council crisis. The councillors, Vijay Kumar Lankesh and Jasvir Kaur, joined eight others who had already quit, citing dissatisfaction with Nahal’s leadership and the indifference of senior AAP leaders.

With 10 councillors withdrawing support, AAP’s tally has fallen below the halfway mark in the 29-member council. The AAP Sangrur Municipal Council crisis has put the party’s control of the civic body at risk. AAP had earlier secured a majority with help from independent councillors and MLAs Harpal Singh Cheema, Barinder Kumar Goyal, and Aman Arora.

Meanwhile, dissenting councillors met Deputy Commissioner Rahul Chaba and ADC Amit Bamby to highlight residents’ issues. Despite the turmoil, Nahal claims the rebels will return soon. Currently, Congress holds nine seats and BJP three.
