Railways Approves Electric Traction Upgrade in Telangana

Telangana Electric Traction Upgrade approved to enhance train speed, efficiency, and capacity on Medchal-Mudkhed and Mahbubnagar-Dhone lines.

Hyderabad: The Ministry of Railways has approved the upgrade of the electric traction system on the Medchal-Mudkhed and Mahbubnagar-Dhone sections. These lines cover most of Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The project is estimated to cost Rs 193.26 crore for Medchal-Mudkhed and Rs 122.81 crore for Mahbubnagar-Dhone.

Currently, the sections operate on 1X 25 KV electric traction. The upgrade will increase it to 2X 25 KV, involving modifications to circuit breakers, switching stations, and additional conductors. The Medchal-Mudkhed section spans 225 km, and Mahbubnagar-Dhone covers 184 km. These single-line sections connect northern and southern India with Hyderabad.

The ministry also sanctioned track doubling between these sections and the Dhone bypass line in August 2023. Work has begun and is progressing steadily. The Secunderabad-Mahbubnagar section was already doubled and electrified as a separate project. Doubling these lines will enhance capacity and allow more trains to operate efficiently.

SCR officials stated that the upgraded traction system will provide higher voltage, enabling trains to run faster and with improved efficiency. Improved voltage regulation will reduce drops, allow fewer substations, and help passenger and freight trains operate seamlessly across the route.
