Renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar passed away on Wednesday at the age of 100 after age-related illnesses. India lost one of its greatest artistic icons, whose work shaped the nation’s cultural identity.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow and said Sutar enriched India’s artistic and cultural heritage. She described the Statue of Unity and his other monumental works as enduring symbols of India’s legacy. She added that his art will inspire generations of artists.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sutar’s sculptures gave India timeless national monuments. He highlighted the Statue of Unity as a powerful symbol of unity and pride. Modi said Sutar’s creations reflected India’s history, culture, and collective spirit. He called the legacy priceless and eternal.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the country lost an outstanding artist. He recalled Sutar’s personal involvement in crafting statues of Lachit Barphukan in Jorhat and Gopinath Bordoloi in Guwahati. He praised Sutar’s exceptional craftsmanship.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Sutar’s death marked the end of an era in sculpture. He recalled honoring the artist with the Maharashtra Bhushan award. Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar also paid tribute. Shinde called him the Kohinoor of Indian sculpture, while Pawar described him as the Bhishmacharya of the art world.
