A Romanian PhD scholar at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her rented accommodation in Varanasi late Thursday night. The 27-year-old student, identified as Filipa Francisca, was pursuing a doctoral degree in Indian philosophy at the prestigious university.
The incident took place in the Garhvasi Tola area, which falls under Chowk police station limits. According to police, when the student did not respond to repeated knocks, her landlord and a few friends alerted authorities. Using a spare key, police entered the room and discovered her lying unresponsive on the bed.
Investigators confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the spot. Initial reports suggest that Filipa had a history of epilepsy since childhood and had been receiving medical treatment. Police have seized her mobile phone, passport, and visa documents as part of the inquiry.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. Officials stated that all legal procedures are being followed and forensic teams are assisting in the probe.
BHU administration has been informed, while the Romanian Embassy has also been contacted to facilitate communication with her family. Authorities assured that the investigation will be carried out with complete transparency.
The sudden death of the foreign scholar has shocked the academic community in Varanasi, where she was known for her dedication to research. Police said further details would be shared after the post-mortem report is available.
