Russia’s notorious mercenary group, Wagner, is leaving parts of Africa’s Sahel region, and a new Russian paramilitary called the Africa Corps is taking its place. Wagner, once praised by President Vladimir Putin, became infamous for abuses against civilians and a failed mutiny against Moscow.

Unlike Wagner, the Africa Corps operates directly under Russia’s defense ministry. Its ranks include elite Russian commanders and former Wagner fighters. They have already joined Mali’s military in combat against local militia groups. Russia plans to expand the Africa Corps to other nations such as Niger, Burkina Faso, and possibly the Central African Republic.

Experts say Russia is rebranding its military presence in Africa. By replacing Wagner with a state-controlled force, Moscow aims to gain more control, reduce legal risks, and appear more legitimate internationally. The Africa Corps could maintain the same functions as Wagner while avoiding the negative reputation linked to the mercenary group.

However, the Sahel remains unstable. Security experts warn that extremist activity continues to grow, and local governments struggle to handle the violence alone. UN officials stress that foreign support must respect human rights while helping stabilize the region.

Russia replaces Wagner with Africa Corps to maintain influence in Africa while projecting a controlled, official military presence.
