Sabarimala Gold Door Mystery Deepens as 4.5 kg Missing in Transit

Sabarimala Gold Door Mystery

A major controversy has erupted over missing gold from Kerala’s famous Sabarimala temple. An NDTV investigation revealed that the temple’s gold-clad door panels linked to the Dwarapalaka idols were removed in July 2019 for restoration and returned after more than a month — but with 4.5 kg of gold missing.

The panels weighed 42.8 kg when they left Sabarimala on July 20, 2019, under the care of sponsor Unnikrishnan Potti. They were supposed to reach Smart Creations, a Chennai firm, for electroplating. However, they arrived there only on August 29, weighing just 38.25 kg. During those 39 days, the sacred items reportedly travelled to temples in Kottayam, Andhra Pradesh, Bengaluru, and even to actor Jayaram’s house for a private puja.

The Kerala High Court has now ordered a detailed probe into the missing gold and irregular handling. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by ADGP H. Venkatesh will investigate the case. The opposition has accused the ruling front of temple treasure mismanagement and demanded a CBI inquiry.

The court has asked investigators to confirm whether the panels now installed are the originals, gold-coated replicas, or copper plates. The SIT must submit its findings within six weeks.
