London Mayor Sadiq Khan strongly rejected Donald Trump’s false claim that the city plans to adopt Sharia law. On Wednesday, Khan called Trump “racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.”
Trump had criticized Khan during his United Nations speech on Tuesday. He called Khan a “terrible mayor” and falsely said London wants to implement Sharia law. Khan, the first Muslim mayor of a major Western capital, responded by saying people wonder why he “lives rent-free inside Donald Trump’s head.”
City Hall emphasized that London is one of the world’s safest cities. Moreover, they praised the growing number of US citizens moving there. UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting defended Khan, stating that the mayor promotes diversity, safety, and better transport and infrastructure—not Sharia law.
Sharia councils exist in the UK. However, they only handle personal and family matters within the Muslim community. Their rulings carry no legal weight, and the government confirmed they have no official constitutional role.
The Trump-Khan feud has lasted years. Khan opposed Trump’s 2016 campaign pledge to ban Muslims from entering the US. He also criticized Trump’s policies as authoritarian. Additionally, he allowed a “Trump baby” balloon during the president’s first UK visit. Most recently, in July, Trump called Khan “nasty” and “terrible,” but British PM Keir Starmer defended Khan, saying he is a friend.
