Sajjan Kumar’s Appeal in 1984 Riots Case Set for November 19 Hearing

Sajjan Kumar 1984 Riots Case Hearing on November 19

The Delhi High Court will hear the Sajjan Kumar’s 1984 riots case on November 19. Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar has appealed against his conviction and life sentence. The Bench could not hear it earlier because the court was not in session.

In February, a Delhi trial court gave him life imprisonment for killing Jaswant Singh and Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984. The judge said the killings were brutal but not among the “rarest of rare” cases that call for a death penalty. The court also noted his age and poor health while deciding the punishment.

The incident is part of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that followed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination. In 2018, the Delhi High Court convicted him for leading mobs that burned houses and killed five Sikhs.

In this case, the court said he led a group that looted and set fire to the victims’ home before killing them. He received life imprisonment and a ₹2.4-lakh fine. The next hearing will decide his appeal.
