The U.S. Secret Service is investigating after a United Nations escalator suddenly stopped when former President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump stepped on it.
Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested the incident might have been a coordinated attempt to embarrass or endanger the former president. “If we find that UN staffers purposely tried to trip up the president and first lady, there must be accountability,” she said.
Leavitt pointed to a London Times report claiming some UN staffers were plotting against Trump, framing the escalator malfunction as part of a broader pattern. She also noted irregularities during Trump’s UN visit, including audio adjustments that lowered the volume during his speech.
Leavitt added, “When you put all of this together—teleprompter, escalator—it doesn’t look like a coincidence to me.” She confirmed that Secret Service agents are actively investigating to uncover the cause.
As of Wednesday morning, neither the United Nations nor the Secret Service has commented publicly on the incident.
