India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital after suffering a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Gill sustained the injury while batting on Day 2, forcing him to retire hurt after he experienced severe discomfort following a sweep shot off Simon Harmer.
The BCCI confirmed that Gill was taken for medical examination and later ruled out of the remainder of the Test. Officials stated that the skipper suffered neck spasms and would continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team. The injury also ruled him out of batting duties on Day 3, when he remained in the hospital.
CAB president Sourav Ganguly visited Gill at the hospital after India lost the Test by 30 runs. India, despite having South Africa at 93/7, failed to chase a target of 124 and were bowled out for 93. Gill’s absence from the match was felt as India slipped to a 1-0 deficit in the two-match series.
Gill is expected to undergo further evaluation ahead of the second Test.
