Sonam Wangchuk ends 15-day hunger strike after violent protest in Leh

Ladakh-based innovator and education reformist Sonam Wangchuk has ended his 15-day hunger strike following violent clashes between protesters and authorities in Leh. Wangchuk had launched the hunger strike to demand urgent government action on environmental and education issues in the region.

The protest, which began peacefully, turned chaotic on the 14th day, prompting local authorities to intervene. Several people were reportedly injured, and property was damaged during the unrest. In response to the escalating situation, Wangchuk decided to call off his strike to prevent further violence.

Speaking after ending the hunger strike, Wangchuk reiterated his commitment to addressing critical issues in Ladakh, including sustainable development, climate change adaptation, and reforms in local education systems. “While I had hoped for faster government action, the safety of the community comes first. We must continue to advocate for change peacefully,” he said.

Wangchuk, widely known for his innovative work in education and engineering solutions for Ladakh, has previously been recognized internationally for his efforts to improve learning environments and promote ecological sustainability in the region. His 15-day hunger strike had drawn national attention, highlighting pressing concerns about environmental preservation, youth education, and governance in Ladakh.

Authorities have assured that the concerns raised during the protest will be reviewed, and officials have promised dialogue with Wangchuk and local community leaders to find long-term solutions.

The incident underscores the delicate balance between activism and public safety, as Wangchuk’s movement continues to inspire discussions on citizen-led advocacy and responsible governance in remote regions of India.
