The Supreme Court of India has said that political leaders and high constitutional functionaries must promote fraternity and follow constitutional values. The Court stressed the importance of responsibility and restraint in public speeches and statements.
During a hearing in New Delhi, the judges warned against the growing trend of divisive and inflammatory remarks by people holding high offices. They said such statements can harm social harmony and weaken trust in democratic institutions.
The Court observed that leaders are role models and their words carry great influence. Therefore, they must act carefully and respect the spirit and ethos of the Constitution. It emphasised that freedom of speech should be exercised with responsibility, especially by those in power.
The judges highlighted the urgent need for political accountability and called on leaders to maintain unity and respect among communities. They said upholding constitutional principles is essential for the country’s stability and progress.
