The Supreme Court has allowed the Election Commission of India to continue the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists across the country. The court said the Election Commission has full authority under Article 324 of the Constitution to carry out the voter verification process.

The Supreme Court verdict on voter list revision came after several petitions challenged the Election Commission’s decision to conduct the SIR exercise. The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Jaymalya Bagchi, ruled that the process does not violate constitutional rules or election laws.

The court said accurate voter lists are important for free and fair elections. Judges also noted that the revision process will improve transparency and strengthen public trust in the electoral system. The verdict now clears the way for the Election Commission to continue voter list updates in different states.

Officials said ration card and driving license cancel after SIR name deletion will become the next step. Authorities will review government documents of people whose names were removed from the voter list during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

Officials confirmed that ration card and driving license cancel after SIR name deletion may affect many individuals. During the SIR exercise, around five lakh voter names were removed from the voter lists in four districts of Seemanchal. If those people hold ration cards or driving licenses, the administration may cancel these documents after proper verification.

Divisional Commissioner Rajesh Kumar said the move aims to strengthen national security and stop illegal infiltration in border areas. Authorities are also monitoring suspicious financial activities and cybercrime networks in the region.

Meanwhile, the government will organize special camps to process citizenship applications for Nepali women married in Bihar. Officials will collect data through surveys and upload the information to official portals for verification.

She has taken the issue from protests to legal action. Banerjee has written again to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She has demanded an immediate suspension of the Special Intensive Revision in the state.

The Chief Minister claims the process began without proper planning or trained staff. She warns that serious irregularities could disenfranchise millions of voters. Banerjee says such exclusions would damage democracy and constitutional values. She has also raised concerns over the absence of Booth Level Agents during hearings. According to her, this weakens transparency and fairness.

Banerjee alleges fear caused by SIR has led to health emergencies among citizens. She also accused the BJP of using voter revision as an election strategy. She claimed outsiders were being added to voter lists before the 2026 Assembly polls.

The Election Commission released a draft voter list on December 16. More than 5.8 million names were removed in the first phase. The voter count dropped from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore. The second phase began on December 27. It involves hearings for 1.67 crore voters.

The Gujarat SIR Employee Death case highlights the growing stress frontline workers face in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

On Friday, 45-year-old Ushaben Solanki collapsed while checking voter forms at Pratap Vidyalaya in Sayajiganj. She assisted BLO Vaishaliben Patel during the ongoing SIR exercise. Staff members rushed to help. They first took her to a nearby clinic and later shifted her to Sayaji Hospital in a 108 ambulance. Doctors tried to save her, but she did not survive.

Ushaben worked at Gorwa ITI and joined the SIR team temporarily. Many employees say the workload keeps rising. They struggle with long hours, rising stress, and limited support.

Her death came a day after a BLO in Gir Somnath district died by suicide. His note mentioned emotional exhaustion due to SIR duties. The back-to-back tragedies sparked anger and fear among workers.

Family members reached the hospital in shock. Colleagues gathered and demanded safety measures, medical assistance, and fair workload policies. Political leaders and unions also called for urgent government action.

Officials have not issued a detailed response yet. Employees want immediate reforms to protect lives and prevent more tragedies.

The BJP has announced a special program called BLA Samman Bihar, aimed at recognizing its Booth Level Agents for their hard work during the recent assembly elections. The party will honor one BLA-1 from each of Bihar’s 243 assembly constituencies. The BLA Samman Bihar ceremony will take place in Patna.

This decision came after a meeting of the BJP Election Management Department. State convener Radhika Raman presented the proposal, and State President Dilip Jaiswal approved it. The event will be held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium in the state BJP office at 11 a.m. Senior party leaders will also attend.

The role of BLAs became extremely important after the Election Commission conducted a major voter list revision before the elections. BJP workers worked closely with BLOs to remove fake and duplicate voters. Their efforts helped the NDA achieve a strong victory, with the BJP winning 89 seats.

BLAs checked voter lists, verified supporters, and ensured smooth voting at booths. They also helped identify bogus entries and supported BLOs in field work. The party wants to reward this dedication through the upcoming ceremony.

The event will recognize their contribution to clean voting and strong booth management.

Sources indicate that the SIR process may officially commence between *October and November*. This exercise aims to ensure that voter lists are accurate and comprehensive ahead of upcoming elections, removing discrepancies and including newly eligible voters.

The process has already been implemented in *Bihar*, where opposition parties raised concerns, alleging that eligible voters were being removed from the rolls. The EC’s nationwide initiative seeks to streamline electoral rolls, enhance transparency, and prevent voter disenfranchisement. Authorities have been urged to follow the directives strictly, ensuring a fair and impartial revision process, reinforcing confidence in the electoral system.

Officials indicated the process may begin in October, soon after the Bihar assembly elections conclude.

On Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar met Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) from all states and union territories. The three-and-a-half-hour meeting included multiple presentations. The session discussed the strategy, timelines, and preparations required for the SIR process. The proposal reportedly received approval during the workshop.

The Election Commission instructed CEOs to finalize a list of documents that voters can use for verification. These papers must be simple, locally accepted, and easily available. States were also advised to consider multiple factors before fixing the verification procedure. The commission clarified that the main aim of the SIR is to remove the names of deceased persons and migrants from the rolls.

Officials assured that groundwork for the revision would be completed by the end of this month. The exercise is expected to ensure cleaner, more accurate electoral rolls ahead of upcoming state and national elections, strengthening the transparency and credibility of the democratic process.

Nearly 3 lakh names may be removed from the Bihar voter list during the ongoing Summary Intensive Revision (SIR). These voters have not submitted documents to verify their identity, and the Election Commission has started sending them notices.

With assembly elections approaching, officials want to ensure that only genuine voters remain on the rolls. Those who receive notices must provide proof of citizenship and identity. If they fail, their names will not appear in the final list, and they will lose their right to vote in the upcoming elections.

Earlier, during the same revision drive, the Election Commission had deleted around 65 lakh names across Bihar. These included voters who were deceased, duplicates, or had shifted to other places.

According to Election Department officials, the current scrutiny mainly affects Bihar’s border districts, where many doubtful entries have been identified. Notices have already been issued in several areas, and more are expected soon.

Authorities stress that the cleanup of the Bihar voter list is vital to maintain accuracy and transparency. By removing nearly 3 lakh names from the Bihar voter list, the Commission aims to ensure free and fair elections in the state.
