Taiwan announced plans to build a new multi-layered air defence system called “T-Dome” to protect the island from growing military threats. President Lai Ching-te said on Friday that the project will strengthen national security and ensure peace in the region.
In his National Day address, Lai said Taiwan will increase defence spending and propose a special military budget by the end of the year. “The rise in defence spending is necessary to counter threats and boost our defence industries,” he said. The new T-Dome system will feature high detection, multiple defence layers, and fast interception, creating a “safety net” for citizens.
Officials said the T-Dome will be included in the upcoming defence budget and may resemble Israel’s Iron Dome. Taiwan already uses US-made Patriot and locally developed Sky Bow missiles, and recently revealed the Chiang-Kong missile, capable of intercepting mid-range threats.
China reacted sharply, accusing Lai of “pushing separatism” and “creating danger.” Lai responded by urging Beijing to renounce the use of force and work towards peace across the Taiwan Strait.
The United States welcomed Lai’s speech, praising his focus on defence readiness and regional stability.
