Telangana Generates ₹16,478 Crore from Land, Spends Over 10% on Interest: CAG
Telangana earned ₹16,478 crore from the sale of its land and property between 2014-15 and 2023-24, according to the latest report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). The report highlights that the State was among 11 in the country that spent more than 10% of their total expenditure on interest payments, indicating a significant fiscal burden despite revenue gains from asset sales.
CAG observations pointed out that while the proceeds from land and property sales provided a boost to the State’s finances, a substantial portion of revenue continues to be allocated to servicing debt. The report also called for better planning and monitoring of asset monetisation and emphasised the need to reduce dependency on borrowing for recurring expenditure.
Officials noted that Telangana’s real estate and infrastructure development contributed to these receipts, and the government intends to continue leveraging surplus assets while implementing fiscal prudence to manage interest obligations and ensure sustainable financial management.
