At the UN General Assembly, former U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized India for “funding the Ukraine war” through its continued imports of Russian oil. He also targeted China and NATO allies, accusing them of failing to cut off Russian energy and calling them “primary funders” of the conflict. Trump warned that the U.S. might impose new tariffs on countries trading with Moscow if Russia does not negotiate peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took a different approach. He defended India, calling it “mostly on our side” and urged Europe to strengthen ties rather than isolate New Delhi. Zelensky emphasized that energy-related disagreements could be managed and that keeping India engaged was crucial for international support.

India has maintained that its oil purchases from Russia are necessary for national energy security and economic stability. Officials argue that Europe’s continued purchases make the criticism of India appear inconsistent.

Adding nuance, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Washington hopes to resolve the tension over tariffs and ongoing trade discussions with India. The exchange at the UN highlighted a diplomatic split: Trump taking a hardline stance, while Zelensky promotes cooperation and engagement with India.
