US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on several European countries over their opposition to America’s Greenland takeover plan. He said a 10 percent tariff will apply from February 1. The move targets Denmark, the UK, France, and other European Union members.
Trump shared the decision on Truth Social. He warned that tariffs would rise to 25 percent on June 1 if no agreement emerges on the full purchase of Greenland. The announcement followed earlier threats against countries resisting his proposal.
European leaders rejected the plan. They said only Denmark and Greenland can decide the island’s future. Denmark recently increased its military presence in Greenland with allied support. French officials said the move showed Europe’s readiness to defend sovereignty.
Trump repeated claims that Greenland is vital for US national security. He argued that control would prevent influence from China and Russia. Danish officials said both sides remain in fundamental disagreement.
Public opposition has grown in Denmark. Thousands marched in Copenhagen to support Greenland’s self-governance. Protesters carried signs rejecting any sale of the territory.
Denmark’s foreign minister ruled out a US acquisition. Greenland’s prime minister said the territory would choose Denmark, NATO, and the European Union over the United States.
