Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday announced that Visakhapatnam is set to emerge as a national hub for ship design and research, underscoring the city’s growing strategic and industrial importance. Speaking in Visakhapatnam, the Minister highlighted the government’s vision to strengthen India’s maritime capabilities through advanced shipbuilding, research, and innovation.
Mr. Sonowal said the initiative would involve close collaboration between government agencies, academic institutions, and private industry to develop cutting-edge technologies in naval and commercial ship design. The project is expected to boost indigenous manufacturing, create employment opportunities, and enhance India’s competitiveness in the global maritime sector.
He added that Visakhapatnam’s port infrastructure, skilled workforce, and existing shipbuilding ecosystem make it ideally suited to become a centre of excellence for maritime research. The Minister also emphasised the role of sustainable practices and innovation in ship design to meet modern environmental and operational standards.
This move aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving self-reliance in defence and maritime industries.
