Why Delhi’s Roads Are Always Congested
Delhi’s traffic woes stem from a mismatch between public transport and short-distance travel needs. A 2025 study by the International Council on Clean Transportation found that 60% of daily trips are under 4 km, yet long-haul buses dominate the network. Additionally, 31% of urban neighborhoods lack convenient access to formal bus services, leading to increased reliance on private vehicles.
Major intersections like Chirag Dilli and Mukarba Chowk are notorious for gridlocks, exacerbated by construction projects and vehicle breakdowns. These bottlenecks drain time and productivity, with economic losses estimated at ₹60,000 crore annually, projected to rise to ₹98,000 crore by 2030.
Proposed solutions include introducing short-distance, high-frequency transit services and intelligent traffic management systems to alleviate congestion and improve urban mobility.
