Why Does India’s Road Safety System Keep Failing?
India continues to record one of the world’s highest numbers of road fatalities despite numerous safety initiatives. Experts attribute this to a combination of poor infrastructure, weak enforcement, and systemic neglect. Badly designed roads, potholes, inadequate signage, and faulty engineering often turn highways into death traps. Poorly maintained intersections and lack of pedestrian facilities further increase risks. Many crashes are also linked to lax monitoring of vehicle fitness and driver licensing. While policies such as the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act aimed to improve accountability, implementation remains patchy. Road safety audits are rarely conducted, and coordination among government agencies is weak. Experts stress that saving lives requires better road design, stricter enforcement, and public awareness campaigns. Without systemic reform and accountability, India’s roads will continue to endanger millions.
