India suffered a shocking 30-run defeat to South Africa in the first Test of the two-match series at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on November 16. Chasing only 124 runs, India were bowled out for a mere 93 in 35 overs, marking their first home Test loss to South Africa in more than 15 years.
In a match dominated by bowlers, South Africa took full advantage of the unpredictable surface. Simon Harmer led the attack with four wickets, while Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj picked up two each, dismantling the Indian batting lineup on a pitch that showed excessive turn and uneven bounce right from Day 1.
After the defeat, former England captain Michael Vaughan criticised India on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the team “deserved to lose” for preparing such a pitch against the reigning World Test Champions.
“Prepare a pitch like that and you deserve to lose against the World Test champs… brilliant win by SA…” Vaughan posted, sparking widespread debate across the cricketing world.
The loss has reignited discussions over pitch preparation, home advantage, and whether extreme conditions undermine the competitiveness of Test cricket.
