Zohran Mamdani Considers Move from Leaky Apartment to Gracie Mansion

New York’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is weighing a big housing decision — whether to leave his modest one-bedroom in Astoria for the elegant Gracie Mansion.

Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, currently rent an 800-square-foot apartment built in 1929. The space includes heat and hot water but no washer or dryer. During a recent interview on The New Yorker Radio Hour, Mamdani shared how their sink leaked, forcing him to mop the floor with towels. “A one-bedroom is a little too small for us now,” he said.

If he moves, the contrast will be dramatic. Gracie Mansion, a 226-year-old residence on the Upper East Side, offers 11,000 square feet, chandeliers, and river views. The home includes a chef, lush lawns, and gardens of apples, figs, and vegetables.

Despite the grandeur, Mamdani remains undecided. “I don’t yet know where I’ll live,” he said. “But I know where I’ll be working — City Hall.

Security and tradition have persuaded most past mayors to choose Gracie Mansion. Time will tell if Mamdani joins them.
