Local Elections in Telangana Likely Under Old Reservation System

The issue of Backward Class (BC) reservations in Telangana has once again returned to the forefront. The Supreme Court has rejected the state government’s G.O. 9 , which proposed 42% reservation for BCs in local body elections. With this verdict, the upcoming local elections are now likely to be held under the previous reservation structure.

This development has dealt a setback to the Congress government, which had promised to enhance BC representation during the elections. However, party sources suggest that the Congress leadership is still exploring legal and administrative options to honor its earlier commitment of 42% BC quota before proceeding with the polls.

A final decision on the reservation policy is expected soon, which will determine whether the elections proceed under old norms or with revised allocations in line with the government’s political assurances.
