A female Booth Level Officer (BLO) working in West Bengal’s Nadia district was found dead at her home on Saturday morning. Police identified the deceased as Rinku Tarfadar, whose body was discovered hanging from the ceiling of her room in the Bengaljhi area of Krishnanagar.
According to officials, the family claimed she was under tremendous stress due to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. Police recovered a note from her room and have sent her body for post-mortem. An investigation is underway.
State minister Ujjal Biswas met the grieving family soon after the incident. The tragedy comes just days after another BLO in Jalpaiguri was found hanging, with family members also blaming extreme workload under the SIR process.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, urging him to immediately halt what she described as an “unplanned and forced” SIR procedure. She warned that the ongoing process is endangering lives and undermining its own legitimacy.
