Chery Automobile’s bold attempt to showcase its new Fengyun X3L SUV turned into a dramatic setback at Tianmen Mountain on Wednesday.
The company aimed to climb the mountain’s famous “Heaven’s Staircase,” a steep 999-step stone ascent known for its tough gradients and narrow steps. Many visitors consider the climb a bucket-list feat, even on foot.
The SUV pushed upward with confidence at first but struggled halfway. It then slipped, crashed into a guardrail, and broke part of the historic staircase. Tourists screamed as the vehicle halted on the steps, where it stayed for two hours.
Fortunately, no one suffered injuries, but authorities closed the staircase for two days.
Chery later apologised and explained the cause. A metal shackle on a safety rope came loose and wrapped around the SUV’s rear wheel. The jam blocked power delivery and triggered the slide.
The company admitted it underestimated the risks and failed to plan the test with enough precision. It promised full repairs, compensation, and stronger safety rules for future stunts.
Chery’s failed run follows Land Rover’s successful 2018 “Dragon Challenge,” when driver Tung Ho Pin completed the climb in under 22 minutes.
