A major political storm has erupted in Punjab after Congress leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu alleged that becoming the state’s Chief Minister requires a “₹500 crore suitcase.” She claimed that no one can secure the top post without massive financial backing. Her remarks came while stating that her husband, Navjot Singh Sidhu, will return to active politics only if Congress officially declares him as its CM face.
The explosive statement has revived tensions within the Punjab Congress, exposing deep internal divisions. Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar quickly reacted, saying Congress has a long history of transactional politics. He even alleged that a former Congress Chief Minister once paid ₹350 crore to secure the post.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the Governor, Navjot Kaur said they do not have ₹500 crore to become CM and alleged that multiple Congress leaders harbour ambitions for the post and would not allow Sidhu to rise. She added that she is otherwise happy outside politics.
The BJP seized the moment, calling it proof of “institutional corruption” within Congress. Party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the remark shows corruption has gripped Congress from top to bottom. Jakhar also attacked the AAP government, citing poor law and order and corruption in the police force.
