The fake marriage bureaus scam is turning the sacred bond of marriage into a dangerous trap. Marriage depends on trust. However, fraudsters now misuse that trust to cheat innocent families.
Over the last three months, more than 16 people in Bhagalpur lost their savings due to the fake marriage bureaus scam. Earlier, such crimes stayed limited to metro cities. Now, they are spreading rapidly to Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, and Purnia.
₹2.5 Lakh Taken in the Name of Shagun
For example, a retired Bihar government employee from Tatarpur searched for a bride for his son. He contacted a marriage bureau on Boring Road, Patna. The bureau shared an attractive profile and arranged a meeting. Soon after, they demanded ₹2.5 lakh as shagun. The family paid the amount. The very next day, the office disappeared.
Teacher Cheated of ₹50,000
Similarly, a teacher from Nathnagar trusted a bureau in Purnia. First, she paid a registration fee. Later, the bureau asked for more money to arrange a meeting. When she visited the office, she found it locked.
Police Advice
According to Bhagalpur City DSP Shubhank Mishra, police register cases quickly and take action against such cyber frauds.
