The Centre has extended the Income Tax return deadline by one day after complaints of glitches on the e-filing portal. Taxpayers can now file their returns for Assessment Year 2025-26 until Tuesday, September 16.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) made the announcement late on Monday night. In a post on X at 11:48 pm, the Income Tax department said the deadline, originally September 15, would now be September 16.
The department explained that the e-filing portal would undergo maintenance from midnight to 2:30 am to update its utilities.
Minutes later, the department revealed that a record 7.3 crore returns had been filed till September 15, surpassing last year’s 7.28 crore. “We sincerely thank taxpayers and professionals for their timely compliance,” the post added.
Earlier in the evening, the department had shared tips to resolve browser-related access issues. However, many users reported that glitches persisted despite following the suggested steps.
The one-day extension gives taxpayers additional time to file without penalty. The record filings highlight growing compliance, even as technical problems continue to challenge the system.
