Mother Tongue Matters: Delhi’s English Schools Integrate Hindi
Following the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)’s recent emphasis on promoting mother tongues in education, several English-medium schools in Delhi have begun incorporating Hindi more actively into their curriculum and daily classroom interactions. The move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages instruction in regional languages, especially at the foundational level.
Teachers are now blending Hindi into lesson plans, morning assemblies, and even internal communication, aiming to build stronger linguistic roots among students. School administrators say this shift helps students understand complex concepts more easily and fosters cultural connection.
While some parents initially expressed concerns about a possible dip in English proficiency, educators have reassured them that both languages will be balanced. Experts believe this bilingual approach could lead to better cognitive development and inclusivity in the classroom.
The transition marks a significant cultural shift in Delhi’s traditionally English-dominated private school ecosystem.
