Shillong, Meghalaya — 24 November 2025:
North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has implemented stricter campus traffic rules, including a maximum speed limit of 30 kmph and mandatory helmets for all two-wheeler riders and cyclists, following a serious accident near the campus gate last week.
The incident involved a security guard, reportedly under the influence, who rammed his vehicle into two first-semester students. The accident, captured on CCTV, raised concerns about insufficient enforcement of safety and traffic regulations on the NEHU campus. While the students are now out of danger, they continue receiving treatment at a Shillong hospital.
University authorities emphasized that the new measures are part of a “zero-tolerance approach” toward reckless driving and unsafe behaviour on campus. Repeat offenders will face strict disciplinary action. Signboards displaying the 30 kmph speed limit and helmet requirement have been installed at key locations to ensure compliance, and officials plan to increase monitoring and conduct awareness campaigns on safe commuting practices.
The NEHU campus covers a large area where two-wheelers and bicycles are primary modes of transport. Officials highlighted that the updated traffic rules aim to reduce accidents and foster a culture of responsible commuting among students, staff, and visitors.
Authorities have also indicated that they will continue reviewing traffic policies to adapt to campus needs and prevent further incidents. Students and staff are urged to adhere strictly to the rules and cooperate with security personnel, contributing to a safer and accident-free environment on campus.
The enforcement of these rules marks an important step in improving road safety standards at educational institutions in Meghalaya.
