Bihar is set to introduce a new pricing system for smart prepaid meter users from April 1. Under this rule, electricity will be cheaper during the day and more expensive in the evening.
The smart prepaid meter system follows a Time-of-Day tariff approved by the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission. Over 87 lakh consumers will benefit from this change.
During daytime (9 am to 5 pm), users will pay only 80% of the normal cost. This means ₹100 worth of electricity will cost ₹80.
However, during peak evening hours (5 pm to 11 pm), electricity will cost more. Consumers may pay up to 120% of the normal rate, making ₹100 usage cost ₹120.
From 11 pm to 9 am, normal rates will apply without any extra charge. The new system aims to reduce pressure on the grid during peak hours and encourage daytime usage when power supply is higher.
This rule will apply to most consumers except agriculture connections.
