The Supreme Court grants justice after 23 years to a woman from Bihar who waited decades for relief after her husband’s death. The long legal battle finally ended with compensation and dignity.
The case relates to March 21, 2002. Vijay Singh died after falling from the Bhagalpur–Danapur Intercity Express due to heavy crowding at Bakhtiyarpur station. His wife, Sanyogita Devi, filed a compensation claim soon after the tragedy.
Years passed without closure. The matter reached the Supreme Court, where a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant took firm action. The Court ordered the Railways to ensure the widow received her rightful compensation.
The Railways traced Sanyogita Devi with help from local police and district officials. Officials collected her Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details. After verification, the Railways paid ₹9 lakh as compensation.
During the hearing, the CJI said the Court only wanted to see “a smile on the face of a poor person.” The remark reflected the human side of justice.
This case shows how persistence can lead to results, even after decades. It also highlights the Court’s role in protecting ordinary citizens.
