The *Supreme Court of India* reprimanded the *Tamil Nadu government* regarding its decision to install a *bronze statue of former CM Karunanidhi* at the *Valliyur Daily Vegetable Market public arch*. The matter came up during a petition seeking permission for the statue’s installation.

The court questioned, *“Are government funds being used for erecting statues of your leaders? This is not permissible.”* It advised the petitioners to approach the *lower court for permission* instead of using public money.

Earlier, the *Tamil Nadu High Court had already rejected requests* for installing statues in public spaces, emphasizing that *government resources should not be used for personal or political glorification. The Supreme Court’s remarks reinforce the principle that **public funds must serve public interest* and cannot be allocated for erecting statues of political figures, upholding transparency and accountability in governance.
