On April 10, 1995, Tamil Nadu witnessed a rare political flashpoint involving the state Governor. Governor M. Channa Reddy was travelling from Raj Bhavan to Pondicherry when his convoy was stopped near Tindivanam. Members of the ruling AIADMK allegedly pelted eggs and stones at the convoy, raising serious concerns.

The protesters were reportedly led by S.S. Panneerselvam, then a district party secretary. They opposed Governor Reddy’s interaction with Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy, who had sought legal action against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa over corruption allegations. The convoy remained halted for over 15 minutes at a major junction.

Governor Reddy contacted the district police chief and instructed officials to clear the road. Police later stated that eggs and stones were thrown but did not hit the vehicles. The incident occurred amid known tensions between the Governor and the Jayalalithaa-led government.

The Governor later sent a report to the Centre, alleging political interference and police support for the protest. Jayalalithaa rejected the claims and urged the President and Prime Minister to recall the Governor, accusing him of bias and misreporting state affairs.

The debate on the Babri Masjid in Bengal has become a major topic in West Bengal. MP Kaushlendra Kumar said that Muslims have every right to build the Babri Masjid in Bengal, and no one should stop them. He stressed that India’s Constitution gives all citizens the freedom to follow their religion and live with dignity.

He explained that people know Babur only from books, and today’s issues matter more. Kumar said that modern India stands on equality and rights for all communities.

While speaking to reporters in Bihar Sharif, he called India a strong democracy. He said that people from many castes and religions live together, and this unity is the strength of the country. If the local people want to build a mosque, they can do so without fear.

Kumar also responded to a direct question about the mosque’s construction. He said that building it is completely right and the community should go ahead. He added that no group should object to a peaceful religious activity.

He also referred to Humayun Kabir, who laid a foundation stone for the mosque in Murshidabad. Kabir made the announcement in November and performed the ceremony on December 6, after which the TMC removed him from the party.

The law has already become a matter of national debate. However, the court stayed three provisions of the Act, stating that they require closer examination.

CPI General Secretary D Raja, one of the petitioners, welcomed the move. He said the court highlighted key constitutional concerns. Raja stressed that the Act cannot be implemented until these issues are addressed.

He explained that both the government and Parliament must resolve the objections. Without these steps, the Waqf Amendment Act will remain stalled. Raja emphasized that the ruling shows the law needs more clarity and changes.

“The government must respond. Parliament should act quickly,” Raja told reporters. He added that ignoring the Supreme Court’s concerns will block the law’s progress. His remarks underline the growing tension between politics and judiciary over the controversial Waqf reforms.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has firmly stated that the Election Commission alone decides SIR—the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. It told the Supreme Court on Saturday (September 13, 2025) that no other authority can interfere.

The ECI argued that any court direction to hold SIR at “regular intervals” would amount to judicial overreach. It stressed that electoral roll revisions and their schedules fall strictly within its own jurisdiction.

According to the Commission, electoral integrity depends on its independence. External interference could undermine the credibility of elections. The ECI pointed out that its authority comes directly from the Constitution. This constitutional mandate allows it to maintain accurate and updated voter rolls.

During the hearing, the Commission highlighted the risks of imposing uniform timelines for SIR across the country. Conditions vary from state to state, and flexibility is essential. The ECI said it carefully assesses each situation before deciding the timing of revisions.

The Supreme Court noted the submissions and will study the matter further. This case highlights the balance between judicial review and institutional independence. It also reinforces the ECI’s central role in protecting India’s democratic process.

Democracy Under Attack, Election Commission Failing Free Polls, says CPI leader D. Raja while addressing the CPI State meet in Alappuzha, Kerala, on Wednesday. He warned that people’s right to vote is being “snatched away,” pointing to recent developments in Bihar as an alarming example.

Raja inaugurated the delegates’ conference and expressed deep concern over the state of democratic institutions in India. According to him, the Election Commission has failed to safeguard free and fair elections. He argued that such failures weaken the foundation of democracy and erode public trust.

The CPI leader also said that attempts to undermine elections are a direct assault on the Constitution. He added that protecting democracy requires active resistance from political parties, civil society, and citizens.

Raja emphasized that the CPI would continue to fight for people’s rights and ensure that elections remain a true reflection of the people’s mandate. He urged delegates to stay vigilant, build grassroots movements, and counter anti-democratic practices.

The Alappuzha state meet also discussed organizational strategies to strengthen the party’s presence in Kerala and other states ahead of upcoming elections.

Senior Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury strongly criticized BRS for staying away from the Vice President election. She called the move “a shame” and questioned why the party could not support a Telugu candidate contesting for a top national post.

Chowdhury alleged that BJP and BRS were working together, which explained their decision to abstain. She accused both parties of enacting a political drama to mislead the public. “BRS had a responsibility to stand with a Telugu leader after supporting the Telangana statehood movement,” she remarked.

She also made it clear that all Congress MPs were voting for Sudarshan Reddy, the INDIA bloc candidate. “Victory or defeat comes later, but we stand by him,” she said, stressing her party’s commitment.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Mallu Ravi expressed optimism about a surprise outcome. He predicted cross-voting could favor the INDIA bloc nominee. “If the INDIA candidate wins, democracy will survive,” Ravi said, adding that the mood of the nation was firmly in favor of the opposition alliance.
