Trump’s Exit From 66 Global Groups Has Limited Financial Impact

66

The Trump administration recently announced plans to withdraw from 66 international organisations. While the move aligns with the “America First” policy, experts say it will have little impact on overall US funding.

According to analyst Brett Schaefer, spending on these groups accounted for less than 3% of US international contributions in 2023. Most of the listed organisations are small and have limited influence. As a result, the financial effect remains minimal.

Meanwhile, the decision reflects Trump’s push toward a tougher foreign policy approach known as “peace through strength.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the move and called several organisations wasteful and ineffective. He also confirmed that reviews of other global bodies are ongoing.

However, analysts believe the announcement is largely symbolic. Bloomberg Economics expert Chris Kennedy noted that the US remains part of major institutions such as the OECD. Similarly, UN expert Eugene Chen said Washington cannot fully exit some agencies because they operate under the UN Secretariat.

Despite criticism, the US continues selective engagement. It pledged $2 billion to UN humanitarian programs and worked with the Security Council on Gaza policy.

Experts warn the move could allow China to expand its influence. Still, the US remains dependent on global cooperation for peace and security goals.
