Hyderabad Doctor’s 8-Year Battle Leads to Ban on Fake ORS Products
After an 8-year battle by Hyderabad-based paediatrician Dr. Sivaranjini Santhosh, India’s food regulator has finally taken action against fake ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) products. Dr. Santhosh raised concerns that many tetra-pack drinks claiming to be ORS did not meet the required salt and sugar standards, and instead worsened dehydration in patients suffering from diarrhoea.
These products, sold by several big companies, entered the market without proper regulation. According to Dr. Santhosh, they were misleading and potentially dangerous, especially for children. She documented several cases and pushed authorities to investigate and act.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has now tightened rules to ensure only scientifically approved ORS can be sold. Dr. Santhosh called it a major win for public health, saying, “There were big companies, but we won.” Her efforts are being widely praised for protecting patient safety.
