The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange and Yellow alerts for several districts of Tamil Nadu for the next three hours, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning. According to the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), parts of Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli may experience moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning, raising concerns over waterlogging and traffic disruptions. These districts are currently under an Orange Alert.
Yellow alerts have been issued for additional districts including Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Theni, Madurai, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Karur, Salem, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The IMD has also cautioned that strong winds between 41–61 kmph are blowing over southern districts, while moderate winds continue across eastern parts of Tamil Nadu. A total of 17 districts are under active weather warnings today, with four of them placed under Orange Alert until 4 PM.
Rescue and disaster management teams have been kept on standby due to risks of lightning, waterlogging and storm-related incidents.
