Washington: White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro has stirred debate with his comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to China. Speaking to CNBC, Navarro said, “I don’t think Modi felt comfortable standing together on a stage with China.” His remarks come as Washington closely watches India’s outreach to Beijing.
Navarro also said India is “coming to the table” ahead of high-stakes trade talks in New Delhi on Tuesday. US officials are expected to push India to cut tariffs on American goods and reduce its reliance on Russian energy.
The trade adviser has long criticised India’s oil strategy. He accused New Delhi of helping fund Moscow’s war by buying discounted Russian crude, calling it “blood money.” He also claimed India acts as a “global clearinghouse” by refining Russian oil and exporting finished products. Navarro suggested steep tariffs on Indian goods — some as high as 50% — could be eased if India scaled back Russian imports.
India has defended its stance, saying energy security is a priority. Officials argue that affordable Russian oil is essential for meeting growing demand and shielding people from high global prices. Modi’s outreach to China has only added to Washington’s concerns.
