Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has once again sparked debate in the film industry by openly criticising the toxic culture of Bollywood and voicing concerns about the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cinema. Speaking at a recent media interaction, Kashyap said that the industry often prioritises power networks over talent, creating an unhealthy environment for genuine artists.
He argued that the toxic ecosystem discourages creativity and prevents new voices from emerging. “Bollywood’s problem is not lack of talent, it’s the system that sidelines it,” Kashyap remarked. He pointed out that while the industry celebrates blockbusters, it often fails to provide space for diverse storytelling.
Turning to technology, the director expressed unease about the rising influence of AI in filmmaking. Kashyap warned that over-reliance on artificial tools could compromise originality and human creativity. “Cinema is about emotions and human experience. If AI replaces that, we risk losing the very soul of storytelling,” he said.
Kashyap’s comments come at a time when AI is increasingly being used in scriptwriting, editing, visual effects, and even acting simulations. While some see AI as a cost-effective tool, many filmmakers share Kashyap’s concerns that it could undermine the artistry and authenticity of cinema.
Known for his bold films and candid opinions, Kashyap has often been a critic of Bollywood’s mainstream culture. His latest remarks have once again divided opinions — with some praising his honesty, while others argue that technology and cinema can co-exist if used responsibly.
The filmmaker, however, stood firm on his stance, urging the industry to focus more on nurturing talent and protecting the human essence of storytelling, even in an age of rapid technological change.
