Fiery Streak Lights Up Delhi-NCR Sky: Meteor Shower or Space Debris?

Bright fiery streak seen over Delhi-NCR sky, sparking meteor or space debris debate

Residents across Delhi-NCR were left awestruck on Saturday night as a fiery streak lit up the sky, sparking speculation over whether it was a meteor shower or space debris. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a bright, fast-moving light cutting across the skyline around 8:45 PM, with many sharing videos and pictures on social media.

The dazzling phenomenon was visible in several parts of the National Capital Region, including Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and central Delhi. People described the streak as a glowing trail that lasted only a few seconds before disappearing. Some initially mistook it for a shooting star, while others suspected a satellite re-entry or fragments of space junk burning up in the atmosphere.

Astronomers say the spectacle could have been caused by either a meteor burning upon entering Earth’s atmosphere or debris from a defunct satellite. Experts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are yet to confirm the exact cause, but preliminary assessments lean toward natural meteor activity, given the timing coinciding with seasonal meteor showers.

Authorities have reassured the public that there is no risk to life or property. “Such events are not uncommon during this period when small meteors enter the Earth’s atmosphere and burn up due to friction,” an ISRO scientist explained.

The rare sight added excitement to the weekend night, with sky-gazers calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime view.” Scientists advise enthusiasts to remain alert for upcoming meteor showers, which are expected to peak in the coming weeks, offering more chances to witness celestial wonders.
