In Bihar politics, family connections play a big role. About 27% of MLAs, MPs, and MLCs in the state belong to political families. The trend is even stronger among women—57% of them come from political families. According to the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), Bihar ranks high in dynastic politics, only behind Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
Several major families dominate politics in Bihar. The Yadav family led by Lalu Prasad Yadav, the Paswan family of late Ram Vilas Paswan, the Manjhi family, and the Chaudhary family are key examples. Their children, spouses, and relatives continue to hold important positions.
In Gaya, Nawada, and Jamui, family politics has been strong for decades. The Manjhi, Yadav, and Singh families have built lasting political bases. Similarly, in Mokama, families of Krishna Singh, Suraj Bhan, and Anant Singh control the political stage.
Regional parties also show dynastic strength. About 50% of representatives from LJP (R), HAM, and AJSU belong to political families. RJD and JDU also see 31% dynasty-based leaders.
This deep-rooted system makes family politics in Bihar one of the strongest in India.
