Indian shrimp exporters are turning their attention to China after the United States slapped a 50% tariff on shipments from India. This tariff, introduced as a penalty for India’s continued oil imports from Russia, has made Indian shrimp more expensive than competitors from Ecuador, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

China, once the second-largest importer of Indian shrimp after the US, is now emerging as a key market. Strong domestic demand and forward contracts from Chinese buyers are helping Indian exporters maintain growth. “The tariff shock has become a blessing in disguise,” said Shaji Baby John, chairman of Kings Infra Ventures Ltd.

Indian exporters are also exploring other markets such as Europe, the UAE, Japan, and South Korea to reduce dependence on the US. Those with active US contracts are negotiating ways to share the higher tariff burden. Meanwhile, domestic demand in cities like Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad is also rising.

According to India’s commerce ministry, marine product exports reached $7.39 billion in FY25, with $2.68 billion going to the US. Experts warn that tariffs will impact multiple sectors, but Indian shrimp exporters see China as a promising alternative to maintain competitiveness.
