Nearly 2 million people evacuated southern China as Typhoon Ragasa, one of this year’s strongest storms, approached the coast. The typhoon has already caused deadly flooding in Taiwan, where at least 17 people died after a natural dam collapsed, sending 68 million tons of water through Guangfu township.

Ragasa brought hurricane-force winds and heavy rain to Hong Kong, Macao, and Guangdong province. In Hong Kong, gusts reached 168 km/h (104 mph), toppling trees and scaffolding, injuring 82 people, and flooding streets. The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel reported waves crashing into its lobby, though no injuries occurred. Authorities closed schools, businesses, and public transit, including Hong Kong’s busy airport.

Across southern China, cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou faced massive waves and strong winds. Officials evacuated 1.89 million people in Guangdong and relocated over 10,000 vessels to safer waters. More than 38,000 firefighters stand ready for emergencies.

Though the region is highly populated, it is well-prepared for typhoons, with advanced drainage systems and emergency infrastructure. Experts warn climate change makes storms stronger and more unpredictable, urging cities to update building codes.

The Philippines, already hit by Ragasa as a Category 5-equivalent storm, continues cleanup, while a new typhoon, Opong, intensifies in the region.
