Tragedy at Nalanda Engineering College Sparks Student Protests

Students protesting after Nalanda College student death

Chaos erupted at Nalanda College of Engineering in Chandi, Bihar, after a female student tragically fell to her death on Wednesday, prompting violent protests by students against the college administration.

The student, identified as Sonam Kumari, reportedly fell from a rooftop, dying instantly. The exact circumstances of her fall remain unclear. While some students suggested she was stressed over low exam scores, her family has denied this claim.

Following the incident, students accused Principal Gopalanandan of negligence, alleging he refused to provide a college vehicle to take Sonam to the hospital, reportedly saying it would “get dirty.” Many students argued that immediate medical assistance might have saved her life.

News of Sonam’s death led to unrest outside Chandi Referral Hospital, where hundreds of students gathered. Protesters damaged property, including the windows of a senior police officer’s vehicle, set a scooter on fire, and clashed with law enforcement personnel. Police used batons to disperse the crowd, while also attempting to restrict media coverage of the chaos.

Students have demanded strict action against the principal, holding him responsible for the preventable death. Police from across Nalanda district were deployed to restore order, and authorities stated that efforts to control the situation continued until the early hours of the morning.

The tragic incident highlights concerns over student safety, emergency response, and accountability in educational institutions.
