Typhoon Ragasa forced nearly 2 million people to evacuate in southern China as it hit one of the world’s most crowded coasts. The storm had already caused deadly flooding in Taiwan before reaching China.

Ragasa slowed down and weakened to a severe tropical storm early Thursday. But it left a trail of destruction in Guangdong province, including landslides, flooding, and huge waves in cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Schools, factories, and transport services shut down in several cities. The Chinese government set aside $49 million for relief.

In Taiwan, at least 14 people died, and 31 went missing after a natural dam collapsed, releasing 68 million tons of water. Videos showed streets flooded, cars swept away, and residents seeking shelter on higher floors.

In Hong Kong and Macao, strong winds and storm surges toppled trees, damaged buildings, and flooded streets. Coastal waves reached 112 mph in Shenzhen. Many residents moved to temporary shelters.

The Philippines also faced severe damage, including seven fishermen killed when a boat overturned. Cleanup efforts are underway, while another storm, Opong, gains strength.

Experts warn climate change is making typhoons stronger and more unpredictable. Cities will need updated building codes and better infrastructure to cope with future storms.
