New Dinosaur With Giant Claws Found in Argentina

New Dinosaur With Giant Claws

Scientists in Argentina discovered a new dinosaur with massive claws. This predator likely ate ancient crocodile relatives. The dinosaur, named Joaquinraptor casali, measured about 23 feet (7 meters) long.

It comes from a mysterious group called megaraptorans. These creatures roamed South America, Australia, and parts of Asia. They had long skulls and powerful claws. However, researchers are still learning how they hunted and where they fit in the evolutionary timeline.

The team found parts of the skull, along with arm, leg, and tail bones in the Lago Colhué Huapi rock formation in Patagonia. Unique features in these bones helped identify it as a new species. Federico Agnolin from the Argentine Museum of Natural Science said this find is “one of the most complete skeletons yet” among megaraptorans.

Joaquinraptor lived around 66 to 70 million years ago, close to the time dinosaurs went extinct. Scientists estimate it was at least 19 years old when it died. Interestingly, a front leg bone pressed against its jaws—likely from an ancient crocodile relative—may reveal clues about its diet and hunting style.

Lucio Ibiricu, who helped name the dinosaur, honored his son Joaquin. He believes his son would have loved being connected to such a fascinating creature.
