IIT-Madras Builds India’s Cancer Biobank, Boosts Precision Oncology
IIT Madras is advancing cancer research through a national Cancer Tissue Biobank, capable of storing up to 25,000 tumour samples at ultra-low temperatures. In collaboration with the Department of Science & Technology, this initiative supports deeper insights into Indian cancer profiles. Alongside, IIT-M is developing lab-grown organoids—miniature, lab-cultured replicas of human organs—to simulate tumour behavior. These organoids will help test cancer treatments and personalise therapies. The institute is also leading the Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas, mapping Indian cancer genomes for precision medicine. This integrated approach aims to revolutionise diagnosis, drug response, and patient-specific treatment.
