Two civilians killed in Ladakh protests were cremated in Leh on Sunday (September 28, 2025) under heavy security. The two civilians killed in Ladakh protests had died on September 24 during demonstrations that turned violent over broken promises and denial of Sixth Schedule rights.
The victims were identified as Jigmet Dorjay, 25, from Kharnakling village, and Stanzin Namgyal, 23, from Igoo village. Their last rites took place between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Authorities allowed only close relatives to attend, while the city remained under tight restrictions.
A curfew stayed in place for the fifth straight day. Roads were empty, markets remained shut, and security forces guarded every corner. Officials insisted these steps were necessary to prevent further violence.
The protests reflect growing resentment across Ladakh. People who once cheered the abrogation of Article 370 now feel betrayed. Youths face rising unemployment, and the absence of Sixth Schedule protections has deepened frustration. Because of these unkept promises, many locals have taken to the streets despite curfew orders.
Meanwhile, civil society groups have urged calm, yet they also demanded urgent talks with the Centre. Until promises are honored, they warned, unrest will likely continue. The BJP government faces mounting pressure to deliver solutions and restore peace.
